If you talk about national pride and patriotism you automatically think of the United States of America. In no other country patriotism plays a bigger role than in the USA (maybe in some fascist nations). A flag in every frontyard, a salute to the country by re-enacting historical events and a president who is the carnation of patriotism
Especially after the terror attacks on September 11th reminded the US inhabitants how good and honourable their country is claimed to be.
Maybe this kind of thinking is good for self-reliance but many European countries are stressed by those excrescences. Perhaps the Europeans shoud perform some more national patriotism on their own?
I think the answer has to be no!
Such kind of patriotism corrupts clear thinking and judgement concearning national and international questions. A nation needs a certain degree of retaining – which the USA is lack of.
Towards all other European countries Germany mustn’t perform patriotism that excessive. We are aware of our history and so are other nations. Easily this could lead to many missunderstandings.
My opinion is that you should be proud of your country, the achievments your ancestors reached, but also be aware of the dark decades your nation has went through and be aware of what you and youre children are going to do.

the fact is that the dark decades in the history of the usa are heavily ignored by the public and the eduction - "native americans" comes to my mind .... nuclear weapons on japan during ww 2 is even a thing americans are proud of because they believe to have ended the war this way ...

Well, only military-journalists are allowed in sometimes to see how training for soldiers looks like. And in a case of war the soldiers who are directly confronted with the fact of war - training will look different than in the home country.
As a experience - I'd say check out people who tell about their experiences, biographies and such.
